Bristol Hotel Virtual Reality Experience

This project digitally reconstructs Hotel Bristol, one of late 19th-century Pera’s prominent hotels, as an immersive virtual reality experience. Designed by French architect Achille Manousso, the hotel was known for its neoclassical façade, marble staircase and generous interiors, serving an international clientele arriving in Istanbul during a period of rapid cosmopolitan transformation.
With no surviving photographs of the original interiors, the reconstruction was developed through extensive historical and architectural research. Technical drawings were combined with archival photographs, period furniture, materials and references from contemporary hotels to build a historically informed interpretation of the lost spaces. Sources included the Istanbul Research Institute, SALT Research and Harvard Library.
Rather than attempting a literal reconstruction, the project approached the hotel as a layered architectural narrative. The interiors draw on the eclectic visual culture of the period, bringing together Art Nouveau, French Rococo, Baroque and Orientalist influences. Materials, furniture and decorative objects were selected not simply as visual elements, but as carriers of cultural and historical meaning. Paintings from the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation’s Orientalist Painting Collection were also incorporated to evoke works that might have appeared within the hotel.
Visitors move through a reconstructed entrance hall, lounge, dining space and hotel room, encountering interactive elements that reveal different aspects of the building and its history.
Created for Looking from In-Between: A Section of Meşrutiyet Street at the Istanbul Research Institute, the project explores how architectural research and immersive technologies can give new spatial form to places that have been lost, transformed or are no longer physically accessible.
These eclectic interiors, blending Art Nouveau, French Rococo, Baroque motifs, and Orientalist objects, created hybrid spaces where East and West met.
Every material and object recreated in the virtual space carries a story, carefully selected to reflect the cultural and aesthetic atmosphere of the late 19th century. Even the wall paintings were chosen from the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation’s Orientalist Painting Collection to evoke artworks that might have adorned the original hotel.
Housed today as the Pera Museum, the Bristol Hotel once embodied the grandeur of 19th-century Pera, a district at the crossroads of cosmopolitan
transformation. Our VR experience reimagines the hotel as it once stood; drawing on technical drawings, historical photographs, and archival furniture and materials from diverse sources, including the Istanbul Research Institute, Salt Research, and Harvard Library. Visitors enter through a meticulously recreated lobby, then move through a historically informed lounge, dining room, and hotel suite, engaging directly with layered architectural and cultural histories.
