Time Travel Virtual Reality Experience

Immersive Experience
2022

Time Travel VR Tour is an immersive virtual reality project that reconstructs lost and transformed environments of Istanbul through architectural research, historical interpretation and spatial storytelling.

The project grew out of an interest in a simple question: how can we experience a historical place not only through images and information, but by entering its space? Developed through Apollo Digital & Architecture, the project brings together architects, historians, 3D artists and XR developers to translate archival knowledge into navigable architectural environments.

The first experiences reconstruct two significant moments in Istanbul’s history: the First Courtyard of Topkapı Palace in the 16th century and At Meydanı — the former Hippodrome — in the 18th century. Rather than treating these places as static historical backdrops, the project approaches them as lived environments. Architecture, landscape, objects, clothing, sound and everyday activities are brought together to recreate the spatial atmosphere of each period.

Each scene is developed through an extensive research and reconstruction process. Historical maps, engravings, written accounts, architectural drawings and academic sources are interpreted alongside knowledge of construction techniques, materials and urban history. Where evidence is incomplete, the project does not attempt to present speculation as certainty; instead, architectural interpretation is used to construct a coherent and historically informed spatial narrative.

As Creative Director and co-founder, Aysegul Karaman led the spatial and visual development of the project, working across architectural reconstruction, narrative design and the coordination of a multidisciplinary team. Development began in 2021, moving through architectural modelling, material and texture studies, animation, interaction design, VR integration and optimisation before the experience was publicly introduced as Time Travel VR Tour.

Conceived as more than a single VR reconstruction, Time Travel was developed as a modular platform for cultural heritage, capable of adapting to different sites, periods and narratives. Its aim is to create a new relationship between architecture, historical knowledge and the visitor — transforming cultural heritage from something observed at a distance into something that can be explored spatially.

The project has since been presented through cultural and technology platforms, including Web Summit Lisbon, and was exhibited at Istanbul’s Digital Experience Center as part of From Tradition to Innovation: Digital Reflections of Cultural Memory.
I think the most important sentence here is “how can we experience a historical place not only through images and information, but by entering its space?” because it very clearly connects this project with your architectural thinking rather than presenting it simply as a VR product.
